Cheats & Bugs
I thought there was no cheat made by the programmers, but I was wrong. On a gaming site I found the following:
Using a text editor, open the file Baldur.ini in your Baldur's Gate directory (but better make a copy of it first) and find the Game Options section. Add the line: Cheats=1 Make sure you save the changes. Run the game. During the game, hit Ctrl + Tab to bring up the console. Type in the cheats below exactly as they appear (they are case-sensitive), then hit the Enter key to activate them.
- Cheats:CriticalItems() - Spawns all of the game's critical items
- Cheats:DrizztDefends() - Creates a friendly Drizzt
- Cheats:DrizztAttacks() - Creates a hostile Drizzt
- Cheats:Midas() - Gives you 500 gold
- Cheats:FirstAid() - Creates 5 healing potions, 5 poison antidotes, and 1 Stone to Flesh scroll
- Cheats:CowKill() - Creates a Cow Kill spell if you're near a cow
- Cheats:TheGreatGonzo() - Summons 10 killer chickens to fight for you in battle.
Another way of cheating is to change the information which is stored when you save your game. You must have a HEX editor to do this. I personally recomend using A.X.E. from Kahei Software, because it is freeware, it is easy to use and download (~260 kb)
If you have one such program and you are sure thet you have kept a backup of baldur.gam then open it (it is in the saved game dir) and go to one of these offsets:
- 0018,0019: The amount of the party's GP in hex. FF,FF equals 65.000 (use the Windows Calculator to convert a decimal to the hexademical number)
- 044C,044D: The STR of your character. 12,64 equals 18/00
- 044E: The DEX of your character. 12 equals 18 (this is applies to the following as well)
- 044F: The CON your charcter has.
- 0450: The character's INT
- 0451: The character's WIS
- 0452: The CHA of your main character.
- 0268 to 026C: Saving throws. Calculate them as above. (Note: This should be changed back when your charcter gains a level, because these change as well.)
- 022E,022D,022C: Experience points. Convert the number to hex and write it backwards. (e.g. if the hex number is 015BA8 then 022C is A8, 022D is 5B and 022E is 01) Do not forget to divide it with the number of the classes you have if you are a mulitclass charcter.
The following are more like the game's bugs, rather than cheats. They may not work if you install the patch.
A way to get 65000 gems is this. Give a charcter three potions at the 'quick items' slots. Turn back to the inventory screen and get the far right potion and change it with a gem. Go back to the adventuring screen and note that the program continues to show it as potion. Click on it many times and turn back to the inventory. There is no number at the corner of the gem. Turn now back to the main screen and repeat. You will then see that you have 65.000 gems.
At the Prologue when you are asked if you need extra practice say yes and enter the building (see Candlekeep). Instead of fighting go to the inventory of each one and take eveything they carry. Export your character and restart the game. You will then have a very good charcter to start the game. The items you carry will be (and are) precious!
The last one is about the so-called Ring of Wizardry that doubles your 1st level spells. It costs around 9500 GP but if you find it they are selling it for more than 25000 GP. However, if you have not installed the patch, you can press "L" at the main (gaming) screen when you are at the Friendly Arms Inn. Just move the mouse around until it reads X:2546, Y:3507. There, under the tree lies the ring. It is well hidden and almost impossible to spot. I put it here as a bug simply because it was removed in the first patch.
And a last note to the 'hardcore' cheaters: If you have installed the patch but you want to get some of the items (such as the Ring Of Wizardry) or undo some changes, delete the appropiate files in the "override" directory. I am not sure what every file is supposed to do, but it works.
