Prologue

The prologue is in fact a tutorial, as Candlekeep is full of tutors and mini-quests. First enter the inn and talk to Winthrop. Accept his joke and don't be rude! Generally, in Baldur's Gate you will get more from being polite than just fighting and killing everyone. Buy a weapon and armor and a helmet if your class allows it. It costs only 1 GP but prevents you from critical hits. And remember: always buy quality, not quantity.

There is no need to rest now. You should rest only if the special symbol of fatigue appears on the character's portait. Also you should rest before a difficult encounter so as to memorize any spells you have cast. Take care to rest in places which seem to be safe and not in palces where an encounter had occured!

You will also see an option for stealing the equipment you need. Better forget it, because your character will probably have very low stats and they will catch you stealing. Later in the game you, if you have high stats you can try it. You will realize that some stores are easier to steal from, or even at some you may steal only armor but not weapons. Anyway, when you go to Nashkel (later) remember to try to steal from the shopkeeper. He is one of the easiest to steal from. Of course before attempting anything illegal like stealing and unlocking chests SAVE. Quick-save is very handy in such situations. Also when you decide to buy something, buy it with the character that has the highest CHA, because prices are affected by it. (higher CHA = cheaper)

Something you can try, and should always try throughout the Sword Coast, is to take everything the open chests in the first floor carry. You can also try to force open or picklock a locked chest but save before doing anything illegal. If you talk to Firebead Elvenhair he will ask you to get an Identify scroll from Tethtoril. Leave the Inn and go North. You will meet Phlydia who asks you to get her a book named "The History of Halruaa". East, in Priest's Quarter's, a man will try to kill you. Hit him first (click on force attack on the bar) and you will get easily 20 XP. After talking to Parda, talk to Dreppin and you will learn where the book is. Get it and give it to Phlydia for a Lynx Eye Gem and 50 XP. Something irrelevant here. If you pickpocket someone before completing the quest they have asked you for, you may get the award, and when you complete the quest it is likely that they will re-award you. This works sometimes. Anyway, go back to Dreppin and talk to him again. He will ask you for an anditode for his ill cow. To the East, there is a Temple of Oghma. Temples are the hospitals of Baldur's Gate. They can heal you, remove curses, or even ressurect you! Also you can donate money to raise your reputation. See the manual for the actual price required to advance in reputation.

Then head north and after you show your skills to Jondalar (just outside Storehouse), talk to Reevor - he will remind you of an errand: Kill the rats in storehouse (5 GP, 50 XP). Go south and at the main gate you will find Hull, who will tell you where to find his sword and an Antidote (in Barracks). In the building just south from there you will find a priest of Oghma who will give you a potion of healing. At the exit Gatewarden will speak to you. Follow him and enter enter the building. Inside you will find Obe. Here you will learn to fight, cast magic, idntify items, use wands and test the thieve's skills. You shouldn't worry about injuries or dying since you are invulnerable. A bug that you can use is to take every equipment all characters carry. (Among them some useful ones, such as a small shield +1, a wand of heavens and a splint mail armor) Then export your character and start a new game with him. He will still carry the equipment he had when exporting him. Be warned however that if you repeat this fight, you will lose all your equipment you 'stole'.

Now head west and enter Bunkhouse. Kill the man attacking you. Go out and enter Barracks (west from there). Open the chest next to the bed on the right and take Hull's Long Sword and the Antidote (all the other chests are locked). Also talk to Fuller fo rerrands and will ask you to give him crossbow bolts. Go to the inner grounds and talk to Tethtoril (he is NE from the center of the map). You can either give it back to Elvenhair who will cast protection from evil, give you a healing potion and you 'll take 50 XP or keep it and scribe it to your spellbook, since it is a very useful spell. Buy some bolts from Winthrop and then start the.. delivery. give the antidote to Dreppin (50 XP), Long Sword to Hull (5 GP, 50 XP) and the bolts to Fuller (10 GP, 50 XP). Then enter the inner grounds and talk to Imoen (remember that much more can be achieved by politeness) and talk to Gorion at the entrance to the locked library. Watch the cut-scene and...
